- Gertrude Kershner wrote her summary report after three months (September 1 to December 1) of visiting almost all of AFSC's children’s colonies—except the smallest ones that we supported but did not manage. At the time of this report, many Spanish children had returned to their families and staff were downsizing or combining as many of the other locations as possible, in anticipation of Nazi encroachment. Kershner discusses the benefits of “home colony” arrangements for some families who don’t like to be separated from their children.
